(Competencias E5, E8, E10, G4)

Despite the rapid advances in digital technology and despite the diversity of many of the practices that photography has had throughout its history, I have always had a special predisposition for night photography, insofar as it not only requires a very special and broad spatio-temporal relationship, but also because it demands a singular mastery of the medium. This requirement of savoir fair and patience is mixed with the stillness of the world throughout the long exposures and confers to this mode of photographic expression a special magic that only those who have practiced it can feel in depth. But Mario Rubio’s work is not a simple recreation of the world and its nights. It is not a mere witness to the events of the universe, but it is also a way of rewriting it, a kind of new narration of what happens, in which the author, far from being a mere transmitter of reality, accommodates and contextualizes it through the play of light itself. In essence, the works we present today are a contest between light and shadow, in which one and the other try to defeat the other. Simple and straightforward images that come close to us to whisper to our ears possible worlds, past histories, infinite imaginaries of what was or could have been.

It is an honor to have the collaboration of Mario Rubio, born in July 1978 (Cuenca) has an intense career in the world of night photography, undoubtedly one of our most important and recognized photographers in our country in this discipline, we leave you with him to tell us a little about his work and what it represents for him the night photography in all its variants, thanks Mario.

I consider myself self-taught and do not follow styles or workflows of renowned photographers, although I am an admirer, among others, of José B. Ruiz José and Troy Paiva for their proximity to the people around them and the simplicity of their work.

Night photography demands, unlike many other photographic variants, the utmost patience. Shots that can last several hours highlight in most of the images the movement of our planet Earth. The stars, with their traces drawn in the firmament, attest to our rotational movement. The celestial equator visually shows us the different directions that the stellar traces take with respect to the earth. Likewise, the clouds that before our eyes are usually static, in night photography come to life, drawn as large sharp trails that decorate the sky.
